Red Rooster Shoreditch
Red Rooster in Harlem, New York, is mostly known because of its chef Marcus Samuelsson. He has become quite famous: he has received a few awards, amongst them best chef of New York City, he is a culinary professor, author, he has done few TV appearances
and also cooked for Barack Obama during his first state dinner.
In May, I was NYC and I was determined to visit his restaurant in Harlem, after hearing so much about it. The restaurant is a representation of all Harlem’s culinary history and is famous for its jerk chicken and ribs. Unfortunately, due to some unpresented factors, and embarrassing ones, I didn’t manage to go. So, when I read that a branch was opening in London in the new members club and hotel The Curtain, I got really excited. It wouldn’t be the same thing, but is the closer I could get.
The restaurant is located in Shoreditch inside The Curtain, has a bar on the ground floor level, which is also a taqueria, and downstairs is the main restaurant. The best part is that it features every day a live band, with a different theme every day, but always Harlem inspired. In the weekends, there is a special brunch with live music as well.
Weirdly enough, however, the stage where the band is playing can’t be viewed from all the tables. The layout is a bit weird. The bar is in the middle of the room and tables all around it in a cross kind of way. The stage is located on one side of the cross, not making it visible from all sides. That’s a pity because the entertainment is so worthy it. It is nice when you come across a dining and music establishment.
The drinks are great and the food true American, full of flavors and taste. Keep in mind the portions are huge. I suggest chicken & waffle, Obama short ribs or bird royale, cornbread-one of the best you had and fried yard bird. The ribs I must say where melting in the mouth; all the flavors and spices bursting out.
Such an enjoyable experience! I am definitely visiting again soon.
To sum up: amazing American, Harlem inspired cuisine, melting in the mouth ribs and best cornbread ever, from famous chef Marcus Samuelsson and live music every day.
