Amorgos, Greece

The beautiful, windswept island of Amorgos is located near Naxos and the Koufonisia, in the group of the Cycladic islands. It is remote, care free, picturesque, with lots of ancient history, some of the best blue waters of the Aegean Sea and one of the most beautiful Choras of the Cyclades. It is a destination for those seeking peace and tranquility and also looking for a unique destination; you won’t find it elsewhere but here. Visit for the great food, incredible hospitality, scenic routes and beautiful scenery.

Niki’s Tips:

  • Do visit the famous Monastery of Panagia Xozoviotissa, with the breathtaking views and architecture.

  • If you are a history buff visit Ancient Arkesini. You park in the village and then walk for half an hour. The site is on a unique spot.

  • The Chora of Amorgos is one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades, so you will enjoy spending most of your time here, especially at night time.

  • There is one large road connecting all of Amorgos, so if you want to be central and easy to move stay closer to Katapola or Chora or in between. Aigiali is further out but is a great location for families, as it has more family accommodation variety and options.

  • Amorgos is a very laid back island, so keep in mind most places are relaxed and don’t need booking. There is also a camping as well, so you will cross paths with a young crowd partying.

  • If you go to Kalotaritisa beach do try the homemade tiropita (cheese pie) from the canteen.

Beaches:

  • Kalotaritisa & Gramvousa: Kalotaritisa has an organized part with sunbeds and a cantine. For Gramvousa you take the little boat across to the island, where there are a couple beaches worth visiting.

  • Mourou beach (Mouros): a small beach with rocks and some sand, great for a dive. There is a taverna on the hill, before walking down to the beach.

  • ·Agia Anna: the famous beach from the movie “Le Grand Bleu”, rocky with clear blue waters, where you can spot the Xozoviotissa Monastery while swimming.

  • Nikouria: you reach this small island by a little ferry from Agios Pavlos, it is just a short ride again. There are options of 2-3 beaches, all free except one which offers sunbeds and a canteen.

  • Levrosos beach: a beach in Aigiali, organized with sunbeds.

  • Plakes: a small beach near the port of Katapola, which can be reached by a small ferry from the port.

  • Maltezi: another beach near Katapola, again possible to reach (and easier) with a small ferry from the port.

  • Megali & Mikri (small & large) Vlichada: two beaches near Aigiali, reached by small ferry from Aigiali.
